Shaykh Hamza Yusuf (may Allah preserve him) was interviewed by the Islam Channel in the UK regarding his latest book, The Creed of Imam Al-Tahawi. I have the book and I read more than half of it already. It is reallly well written and the translation is very good for non-Muslims. The Creed of Imam Al-Tahawi or al-Aqidah al-Tahawiyyah is the aqidah of Ahlus Sunna wal jamma (the majority group of rightly guided scholars of Islam) or the creed of Sunni Islam. There is no differences or controversial material within it. It is widely accepted in the ummah.I have added my own notes after each video. There might be some mistakes, so watch the vidoes!

Part 1:

My notes: He basically discusses the word ‘creed’ or ‘aqidah’ in Islam and its development.

Part 2:

My notes: Starts of discussing the differences in creed over the history of Islam. Imam Tahawi developed an aqidah that is rooted int he Qur’an and mutawatir ahadith (really authentic and popular hadith). A problem today is that Muslims get caught up in details of aqidah instead of focusing on the roots. Amazing aspect of Islam is that its very unified. The maturidi, ashari, and athari are very close with minor differences. The athari aqidah is most closely related to the current day salafi aqidah. Current situation in secular schools is a fitna. Proving God intellecutally is hard for laymen. Many people become confused. For proof, some use the numerical miracle of the Qur’an or the dalail of the Prophet (saas). The hadith of the talking shoe. Nike made a shoe that tells you how far you walked. That’s prophecy. The Prophet (saas) predicted that. The hadith of the fire near Madinah. Major volcanic eruptions near Madinah. Fire extended 200 km. A ‘kafir’ is also a farmer, one who covers up. Kufr is covering up the truth.

Part 3:

My notes: If someone really understands Surah al-Ikhlas, you will have enough creed. Learning creed is fard ‘ayn (obligatory knowledge). Shaykh Abdullah bin Bayyah (may Allah preserve him) said in the introduction of the book that there are two paths for the Muslims. One of them is that concerning oneself with things that affect the heard: purficiation of heart (ihsan). The other is fiqh. Historically, creed was not a focus. Creed is what you learned and faith is what you developed. Not to increase your creed, but to increase your faith. An athiest can learn Islamic creed. It’s all about faith. Faith is light that God puts in the heart. Muslims should be engaged in purifying themselves. The essence of Islam is taqwa. It’s about piety and your relationship with God.

Part 4:

My notes: Muslim activists not informed by sound knowledge can end up doing a lot more harm. Communism is a good example. They didn’t have a sound understanding, they ended up doing far more harm than good. The world is intolerable (simply looking at Iraq alone or Chechyna). A lot of Muslims are troubled so they want to go and change it, but many of them lack the understanding the constraints of the Sunnah of bringing this change. Read the creed without any commentary. It’s very clear. Stay away from takfir (placing someone out of the fold of Islam). When you see a person you don’t know there seal.

Part 5:

My notes: Don’t have contempt for anyone, becuase they could be a friend of God. We should want good for our enemies. A yemeni tribe refused Islam against the Prophet (saas). The Prophet (saas) made dua for guidance after they rejected Islam. The Prophet (saas) was calling Abu Sufyan for 20 years. Rising above our human nature and getting rid of our anger. You can’t say who’s going to hell. Surah Nisa:115 (proof of Ijma) [not sure if it's right]. The jamaa is the rightly guided scholars not the Muslims. Ahlus sunna wal jamma is the majority of schlars.
