      assalamu alaykum

first Democratic or correct tern Democracy is not from Islam.
First lets look at meaning of this word Democracy : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections. Majority rule is a major principle of democracy, though many democratic systems do not adhere to this strictly—representative democracy is more common than direct democracy, and minority rights are often protected from what is sometimes called “the tyranny of the majority”. Popular sovereignty is common but not a universal motivating philosophy for establishing a democracy.
      Democracy and it’s Islaamic Ruling
      Question:

If someone asks you: “what is democracy?”
      Answer:

Say: it is when people govern themselves by themselves without a (revealed) Book or Sunnah.

If it is said to you: “What is its ruling?”

Say: It is major Shirk (polytheism). The proof for this is Allah’s saying:

“Verily, the rule belongs to none but Allah.” [Surah Yoosuf: 40]?

      The Reality of Elections
      Question:

“what is the reality of elections?”
      Answer:

If someone asks you: “what is the reality of elections?”

Say: It is from the democratic systems that seek to wipe away Allaah’s true Laws. It is also an imitation of the disbelievers, and it is not permissible to imitate them. There are many dangers that can be found in elections and not one single benefit or advantage for the Muslims. From the most significant of its dangers is that it makes an equal balance between the truth and falsehood as well as the truthful one and the false one, all in accordance to what the majority holds. It also neglects loyalty and disloyalty (for the sake of Allaah). It also tears apart the unity of the muslims and instead places enmity, hatred, partisanship and fanaticism between them, not to mention fraud, deception, trickery, dishonesty, wastage of time and wealth, the elimination of women’s chastity, and an unstable trust in the Islamic sciences and its people.

abu muslim, ill concede that democracy definitely has its pitfalls, we all saw how bush was elected not once, but twice, and how prone to wastefulness and ineptitude congress can be, but i have 2 problems with the opinions you’ve cited. one, if you live in a democracy, and you will be bound by the rules the majority produces, shouldn’t you try your utmost to fix the things you see as wrong? second, the sheikh cites the many dangers associated with democracy, and alot of them may hold true, but muslims were doing all those things long before democracy. So to cite those things as being exclusive to democracy doesn’t seem fair.
