Some troops came back from an expedition and went to see the Messenger of Allah sallallahu `alayhi wa-Sallam. He said: “You have come for the best, from the smaller jihad (al-jihad al-asghar) to the greater jihad (al-jihad al-akbar).” Someone said, “What is the greater jihad?” He said: “The servant’s struggle against his lust”(mujahadat al-`abdi hawah).

“The Prophet upon him and his Family and Companions blessings and peace returned from one his expeditions and said: “You have come for the best. You have come from the smaller jihad to the greater jihad.” They said, “What is the greater jihad, Messenger of Allah?” He said: “The servant’s struggle against his lust.”

A stronger hadith:

The Prophet also said, upon him peace: The strong one is not the one who overcomes people, the strong one is he who overcomes his nafs [ego]. Al-Haythami declared it authentic in Majma` al-Zawa’id.

A hadith is judged by a muhadith as weak by an incomplete isnad or contradiction of al-Qur’an. Having one witness to the hadith doesn’t make it weak, infact it makes it stronger. Think of the ahadith supplied by Aisha ra and other ahl ulbayt. In the case of the notorious line ‘returned from the lesser jihad…..’ that’s not a weak hadith – It’s a fabricated hadith. Another fabricated hadith is the one that “the ink of the scholar is worth more than the blood of the martyr.” There is absolutely no isnad for either hadith, you won’t find them in ANY book of ahadith. Ask any alim about them and they’ll tell you – fake.

Perhaps I’m mistaken on this whole subject, so does anyone have additional information on “weak” hadiths? ie. what exactly makes it weak? Was their one narrator in a chain who perhaps wasn’t known as trustworhty? Was their only one witness to the hadith? Please, any information would be helpful!

Now, up until 45 secs the speaker is actually spot on and this was the same argument put forth by Shaykh Abdullah Azzam rahimahullah; the problem in our hearts is weakness [wahin] because we have forgotten the obligation of jihad feesabilillah.

Alhamdulillah, at least the right perspective is seen on tv for once, and whether or not the hadith is fabricated is one thing, but im pretty sure the story of Ali RA was completely true. So an attempt was made with the intention show the truth of islam, and i think that’s the big picture that we should all try to appreciate.

The quotation of a fabricated hadith at the end is hilarious. If you want to claim that rasoolullah saw said that ‘greater jihad’ line then produce the isnad.
