Hundreds of Churches going Bankrupt

The current economic crisis has even effected churches:

During this holiday season of hard times, not even houses of God have been spared. Some lenders believe more churches than ever have fallen behind on loans or defaulted this year. Some churches, and at least one company that specialized in church lending, have filed for bankruptcy. Church giving is down as much as 15% in some places, pastors and lenders report.

The financial problems are crimping a church building boom that began in the 1990s, when megachurches multiplied, turning many houses of worship into suburban social centers complete with bookstores, gyms and coffee bars. Lenders say mortgage applications are down, while some commercial lenders no longer see churches as a safe investment.

I wonder if the masajid in America have a seen a decline in donations.

The Al-Shabab Mujahideen are probably the only group that is helping the Somali people in terms of establishing law and order in a land where anarchy exists. I haven’t read or even seen anything from any of the moderate Sufi scholars or websites regarding the destruction of these Sufi shrines.

Edit: I just want to make it clear that I do not support the destruction of the graves of Muslims.

Edit 2: Although many Somalians may appreciate the work that the Al-Shabab are doing in Somalia they still praise Al-Qaeda and are linked with them (via their videos) who are extremist Muslim and have deviated by the majority of the scholars of the ummah.

Allah knows best. May Allah (swt) forgive us all and guide us all.

Condoleezza Rice got that Arab money

Giving gifts is nice, but giving gifts to Condoleezza Rice?  Come on!

While Bush himself didn’t fare nearly as well, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice raked in at least $316,000 in gem-encrusted baubles from the kings of Jordan and Saudi Arabia alone, making her one of top recipients among U.S. officials of gifts from foreign heads of state and government and their aides in 2007.

In January, Jordan’s King Abdullah II gave Rice an emerald and diamond necklace, ring, bracelet and earrings estimated to be worth $147,000, according to the State Department’s annual inventory of such items released Monday just in time for Christmas.

The king and his wife, Queen Rania, also gave Rice a less expensive necklace and earrings along with a jewelry box valued at $4,630, the document shows.

Not to be outdone, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia presented Rice with a ruby and diamond necklace with matching earrings, bracelet and ring worth $165,000 in July. The inventory also includes a $170,000 flower petal motif necklace the Saudi monarch gave to Rice in 2005, which the department says was not previously disclosed.

Are there orphans in Saudi Arabia?  They could sponsor them all.

“All Iraqis are Christian today!” – Christmas in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — From a distance, it looks like an apparition: a huge multi-colored hot-air balloon floating in the Baghdad sky, bearing a large poster of Jesus Christ. Below it, an Iraqi flag

Welcome to the first-ever public Christmas celebration in Baghdad, held Saturday and sponsored by the Iraqi Interior Ministry. Once thought to be infiltrated by death squads, the Ministry now is trying to root out sectarian violence — as well as improve its P.R. image.

Even before I can ask Interior Ministry spokesman Major-General Abdul Karim Khalaf a question, he greets me with a big smile. “All Iraqis are Christian today!” he says.

Saw this in Abu Yusuf’s blog here. He has a good point in saying:

I wonder if America will allow an event like this for Eid or Ramadan, or have someone say “today, all Amercans are Muslims”

Sheikh Ibrahim al-Gaith, head of the feared Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, made the concession after last week’s breakthrough public showings in Jeddah of the comedy feature “Manahi”.

“A movie could possibly be acceptable if it serves good and is suitable under Islam,” Sheikh Gaith said.

Gaith pulled back from comments he made two days earlier branding movies “an absolute evil” in the wake of screenings in the Red Sea port city.

“I did not say that we reject all cinema, but I said that we were not consulted during the organisation of these movie showings,” he explained.

For more than a week from Dec 9, the Rotana entertainment group, controlled by Saudi tycoon Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, showed “Manahi” to rapturous audiences in Jeddah and nearby Taif.

The screenings, approved by the provincial governor, Prince Khalid al-Faisal, sparked hopes that Saudi Arabia would soon allow public cinemas.

Before the first projection of the film, local religious police inspected the facility, a 1,200 seat conference hall, to make sure that men and women would remain separated, adhering to the country’s strict laws on separation of unrelated members of the opposite sexes.

For the three showings daily, women sat in the balcony of the hall while men and boys were on the ground floor.

There are no cinemas in Saudi Arabia, but some coffee shops surreptitiously put on movies for customers and many Saudis enjoy films at home on DVD and satellite television.

To experience a cinema, they have to travel to nearby Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates or other countries.

Hope the good outweighs the bad with this move, inshaAllah. Has anyone heard of the movie, “Manahi”?

American Media and its Jewish Owners

Some Muslims love to talk about how the Jews control everything and some other Muslims love to say how this is all a conspiracy theory and that those Muslims just need a scapegoat to complain for their lack in trying to become a powerful in America. Well here is an interesting piece written by a Jew himself, Joel Stein:

How deeply Jewish is Hollywood? When the studio chiefs took out a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times a few weeks ago to demand that the Screen Actors Guild settle its contract, the open letter was signed by: News Corp. President Peter Chernin (Jewish), Paramount Pictures Chairman Brad Grey (Jewish), Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Robert Iger (Jewish), Sony Pictures Chairman Michael Lynton (surprise, Dutch Jew), Warner Bros. Chairman Barry Meyer (Jewish), CBS Corp. Chief Executive Leslie Moonves (so Jewish his great uncle was the first prime minister of Israel), MGM Chairman Harry Sloan (Jewish) and NBC Universal Chief Executive Jeff Zucker (mega-Jewish). If either of the Weinstein brothers had signed, this group would have not only the power to shut down all film production but to form a minyan with enough Fiji water on hand to fill a mikvah.

They may not own all of the American media, but they do own a big chunk of it. It would be interesting if some Muslims like Prince Walid bin Talal bought some media networks like he buys Citi.

Aqim Salatak – Saudi Arabian Prayer Campaign

One of my relatives from Saudi Arabia fowarded me a link to this website called Aqim Salatak. It’s a group of Muslims in Saudi Arabia producing videos to promote the prayer of Salah. MashaAllah, some of them are really good. The most popular one that many of “western” Muslims have seen is this one. I’ve uploaded the ones that I have never seen before here:

Where Islam Meets America

Introducing Zaytuna College

Islam has never become rooted in a particular land until that land began producing its own religious scholars. During its twelve-year history in the San Francisco Bay Area, Zaytuna Institute has helped a generation of American Muslims appreciate the enduring legacy of Islamic scholarship. Now, Zaytuna has arrived at a new chapter in its history—and, God willing, in the history of Islam in America.

Please join Imam Zaid Shakir and Shaykh Hamza Yusuf during this special evening as they introduce Zaytuna College, discuss the need for establishing an accredited institution of higher learning, describe the details of the Bachelor’s degree programs the College will offer, and introduce the Bay Area Muslims who will help make it a reality.

Finally, they will invite you to support Zaytuna College, where future generations of Muslims can begin to shape the land in which they live.

Zaytuna is having a fundraiser banquet in California for this project they have initiated on Saturday Jan. 10, 2009. I highly recommend to go to this event if you can, if not then support it by sharing it with your family and friends who can attend and help support Zaytuna.
