The United States has decided to boycott an upcoming UN conference on racism unless its final document is changed to drop all references to Israel.
The Conference Against Racism, to be held in Geneva in April, is a follow-up to the conference held in the South African town of Durban in 2001.
On Friday, a US delegation taking part in the preparatory talks in Geneva, said the draft resolution was unacceptable.

Youth Fighting outside the Prophet’s (s) Mosque in Madinah, Some Arrested
- Filed under: News, Sad, Saudi Arabia
- Date: Feb 27,2009 | 09:49 AM
Update: Here is a video from the incident:
News articles:
MADINAH: Madinah Gov. Prince Abdul Aziz bin Majed ordered yesterday the release of all youths under 18 detained in connection with a fight near the Prophet’s Mosque early this week.
The order was issued on the directive of Interior Minister Prince Naif.
The youths are to be released on guarantees from their guardians.
The investigation into the involvement of other detainees in the fight would continue, Col.
Mohsin Al-Radadi, Madinah police spokesman, told Arab News yesterday.
The youths clashed with worshippers at the mosque on Monday evening but there were no casualties.
Another source claims it was a Sunni vs. Shia fight. The Shia were pilgrims, while the Sunnis were the mutawwa or religious police:
Nine held in clashes at Madinah
RIYADH: Saudi authorities have arrested nine people following clashes at the Prophet Muhammad’s mosque in Madinah, an official said yesterday. Some pilgrims clashed with worshippers at the mosque but there were no casualties, interior ministry spokesman Mansur al-Turki said.
Turki declined to comment on reports on Shia websites that the clashes were sectarian and pitted Shias against Sunnis.
“The security authorities will issue a statement later to clarify what happened, the nationalities of the participants in the fight and their motives, once the investigation is over,” Turki said.
Saudi newspapers have reported that on Friday religious police at a shrine in Madinah clashed with pilgrims, who responded by hurling stones at a police station.
Iran’s Arab-language satellite channel quoted witnesses as saying that on Monday evening two Saudi Shias from Al-Qatif in the oil-rich east of the kingdom were killed and four others wounded by anti-riot police.
Saudi group Human Rights First said religious police had attacked Shia pilgrims in Madinah. They condemned the attack, calling on the government to launch an investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice. – AFP
I don’t really know where the truth is, but I’ll update as I find reliable sources, inshaAllah.
I was reading this, thinking it was a Bollywood film:
Holy Matrimony: Indian Politician Converts, Takes Second Wife, Vanishes
Mr. Mohan, a Hindu, Became a Muslim to Marry His Mistress; Then Things Got Messy
CHANDIGARH, India — As India was reeling from the Mumbai terrorist attacks in December, Chander Mohan, deputy chief minister of the northern state of Haryana, made a shocking announcement.
Mr. Mohan, whose overwhelmingly Hindu state of 23 million people is among India’s most prosperous, declared that he had converted to Islam. The 43-year-old father of two added that he had also just wed a second wife, another Muslim convert.
What’s happened since has all the trappings of a Bollywood plot, replete with an alleged kidnapping and mysterious disappearances. The drama’s serious subtext shows how crucial religious identity remains in a country that bills itself as the world’s largest secular democracy.
I need some help from everyone who reads this blog and anyone else who comes across it to share hajj groups that they would recommend and any other tips.
So what are some of the hajj groups in America that are leaving from NY-NJ area or the MD-DC-VA area?
If you could discuss the arrangement for accommodations such as naming some of the hotels that are the better ones in terms of providing a healthy and blessed stay.
Please let me know about pricing as well.
JazakAllah khair!

Durban II drafts: Israel is racist, occupying state
- Filed under: America, History, Israel, Middle East, Palestine
- Date: Feb 23,2009 | 12:55 PM
Draft resolutions for the United Nations Durban II summit on racism brand Israel as an occupying state that carries out racist policies, Haaretz has learned.
The resolutions appear to confirm concerns that the second World Conference Against Racism will be used by Arab nations and others to criticize Israel. Despite those concerns, the United States said last week it would participate in planning the summit.
United Nations sources relayed on Friday that the resolutions, which will be voted upon at the summit, were formulated at a planning session held by a number of nations in Geneva last week.
They refer to “the plight of Palestinian refugees and other inhabitants of the Arab occupied territories,” apparently meaning Israel itself.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that under debate at the session was whether to include a line that the Holocaust “resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people.”
Israel and a number of other countries have already decided to boycott the summit, which is set to be held in Geneva, Switzerland in April.
In a statement released last week, the State Department said the U.S. delegation to the planning discussions would review current direction of conference preparations and whether U.S. participation in the conference itself is warranted.
“This will be the first opportunity the [Obama] administration has had to engage in the negotiations for the Durban Review, and – in line with our commitment to diplomacy – the U.S. has decided to send a delegation to engage in the negotiations on the text of the conference document,” the department said.

Some Muslim women may need to get a few seconds of the sun daily or else they may become deficient in vitamin D. This article was well written and very respectful, alhamdulillah. Check it out and share with your mothers, sisters, wives, aunties, daughters, etc.
The solution is pretty simple. Just go by the window when the sun is shining.
Some houses have nice skylights, this is where that can come in handy.
Edit: Many comments have suggested standing next to a glass window will not help, so hopefully the window is open and the sunlight comes through the mesh.
Does modest dress among Arab-American women promote vitamin D deficiency?
By Jordan Lite | Scientific American
Vitamin D is the vitamin du jour these days, with many doctors urging more sun exposure following years of campaigns advising us to cover up and use sunscreen to prevent skin cancer. Many of us, especially in cloudier areas, don’t get enough of the sunshine vitamin. The elderly and post-menopausal women are more at risk for deficiency, as are those who live in northern climes.
What a powerful video.
