    New Muslim Cool

“New Muslim Cool” follows the lives of Hamza Perez, a Puerto Rican American Muslim rapper (yes all rolled into one!), his family, and his community as they navigate the paths of religion, race, politics, and culture which intersect their lives in post-9/11 America. It is a moving story that showcases the rich diversity of Islam in America,
and which challenges many preconceived notions of what being Muslim in America means.

A Muslim woman was asked to leave her place in line at a credit union in Southern Maryland and be served in a back room because the head scarf she wore for religious reasons violated the institution’s “no hats, hoods or sunglasses” policy, the woman said yesterday.

The incident at the Navy Federal Credit Union on Saturday was the second in a month for Kenza Shelley, and Muslim advocates fear it could become a problem nationwide as many financial institutions, intent on curbing robberies and identity theft, ban hats and similar items without appropriate accommodations for religious attire.

“This may be the tip of the iceberg,” said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations. “There’s got to be a way to work it out so that this security concern does not lead to violations of constitutional rights.”

Shelley, 54, who runs a day care out of her home in Lexington Park, said she has used the credit union in the St. Mary’s County community of California for more than 10 years. Until February, no employees had complained about her head scarf, which covers her hair but not her face. But a few weeks ago, she said, she was standing in line to deposit a check when an employee asked her to come to the back room, referring to a new policy that prohibited hats, hoods and sunglasses. She complied but asked whether she would have to go through the same process each time she made a transaction.

March 4 (Bloomberg) — The Vatican said banks should look at the rules of Islamic finance to restore confidence amongst their clients at a time of global economic crisis.

“The ethical principles on which Islamic finance is based may bring banks closer to their clients and to the true spirit which should mark every financial service,” the Vatican’s official newspaper Osservatore Romano said in an article in its latest issue late yesterday.

Author Loretta Napoleoni and Abaxbank Spa fixed income strategist, Claudia Segre, say in the article that “Western banks could use tools such as the Islamic bonds, known as sukuk, as collateral”. Sukuk may be used to fund the “‘car industry or the next Olympic Games in London,” they say.

Pope Benedict XVI in an Oct. 7 speech reflected on crashing financial markets saying that “money vanishes, it is nothing” and concluded that “the only solid reality is the word of God.” The Vatican has been paying attention to the global financial meltdown and ran articles in its official newspaper that criticize the free-market model for having “grown too much and badly in the past two decades.”

The Osservatore’s editor, Giovanni Maria Vian, said that “the great religions have always had a common attention to the human dimension of the economy,” Corriere della Sera reported today.

Oklahoma Law to ban “head cover” in Driver’s License Photos

Action Alert: Oklahoma Legislature Considering a Ban of the Use on Head Cover for Driver’s License Photos

(March 9, 2009) The Islamic Society of North America is deeply concerned about the recent vote in Oklahoma lower house to ban the use of head cover for driver’s license photos, and believes that such move violate the civil rights of Muslims. The Oklahoma state Senate is considering a bill that has already passed the Oklahoma state House, HB1645, which is intended to amend the present law to prohibit Oklahomans from wearing head scarves or other coverings in driver’s license photographs. If passed, the law will violate the religious and constitutional rights of Oklahomans Muslim women who are required by their faith to cover their heads in public.

Wearing a headscarf is a religious duty for Muslim women, not merely a cultural custom, and legislating its removal from driver’s license photos would create an extreme hardship as it would force Oklahoman Muslim women to choose between applying for driver’s license and following their faith requirements. No American should ever be forced to make such a choice.

The US Constitution protects the free exercise of religion and ensures that religious practices and traditions are respected and accommodated. The Founding Fathers enshrined this inalienable right in the constitutional Bill of Rights and countless fellow Americans fought long and hard to ensure that all Americans are able to enjoy the values of freedom and equality.
    Action

Please call the leaders of the Oklahoma state Senate and ask them to protect the religious freedom of Oklahomans and to reject the ongoing attempt to undermine the civil liberties of Muslim Americans and other religious minorities.

Please comment if you wrote an email or called them. JazakAllah khair. This law doesn’t seem like a big deal, but we need to voice our concern against this, because this could set a precedent for future bans in other areas and other states may follow. The domino effect comes into play. Also, this could be a subtle and indirect attack on the hijab. I am not saying that it is, I am simply theorizing this. So don’t go all crazy and start spreading the word that Oklahoma is banning hijab. They are not. They are just banning head covers on photos on driver’s license photos.

Here is a PDF of the legislation.

The Muslims have established Madinah as their home and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has started to establish the laws of Islam as revealed from Allah. The battles of Badr, Uhud and al-Khandaq are in the past and the Muslims were at war with the Quraysh, but yet the Prophet (peace be upon him) and fourteen hundred followers went on Umrah to Makkah. This idea was shocking to many Muslims since they are in a time of war and Makkah was the city of their enemies.

When the Quraysh saw that the Muslims were coming to Makkah unarmed and for their pilgrimage, this shocked them. They wanted to fight Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the companions, but they couldn’t because the Quraysh were known as the people who take care of the pilgrims. They also did not want the Muslims to enter, so they sent Urwah ibn Masud as the negotiator. The outcome of this was known as the “Treaty of Hudaibiyyah.”

These were the major points of the treaty:

There is a fascinating event during the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in which he was fleeing Makkah with Abu Bakr and ‘Amr bin Fuhayrah from the Quraysh. He choose one of the best guides during that time who happened to be non-Muslim. I find this interesting because Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an don’t take the unbelievers as protectors, but yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) trusted Abdullah bin Urqat (not Urayqat), a non-Muslim guide, with protecting him and guiding him away from the entire Quraysh tribe from finding him.

There are many Muslims in today who condemn others who are simply “friends” with the non-Muslims, but yet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put his trust in a non-Muslim. Of course, Allah (swt) is the one who protects, but yet Allah used Abdullah bin Urayqat to assist in the protectiong of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

This shows that there is no problem in seeking help from the non-Muslims when they are the best in whatever field they are in. There is nothing wrong in it, becuase you are putting your trust in Allah first and foremost anyway.

EDIT: I need to clarify what I mean here. I mean that just because the dentist or mechanic is a “kafir” doesn’t mean we can’t trust them to fix our teeth or car. What Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an is 100% true. We should not take the kufar as our protectors but the Prophet (saas) has showed us how to apply this ayah in our lives with the way he dealt with the non-Muslims living in Madinah.

    And Allah knows best.
