High-maintenance and the back hand

“If a person gives SR1,200 to his wife and she spends SR900 to purchase an abaya (the black gown) from a brand shop and if her husband slaps her on the face as a reaction to her action, she deserves that punishment,” said Judge Hamad Al-Razine.

Al-Razine’s comment evoked an immediate reaction from the women in the audience who loudly protested. They were all the more surprised when they learned that the man who made the comment was a judge.

Props to the sisters that protested.

  1. Not that i am in favor of giving a woman the back-hand, but isn’t 900 riyals a little much for a ninja costume?

That equates to at least 200 dollars.

  2. It would have been more productive if the husband had simply told his wife that the 900 riyal abaya made her bum look big… seriously, back handers are just not on.

  3. I think it is fair to note that Al-Razine also made the following statement:

“Al-Razine called for respecting the views of girls before their marriage, adding that it is better than pushing them into indulging in immoral activities.”

Just to add some context to the article.

  4. Interesting. If the husband gave it to her for her own spending pleasure, then his reaction shouldn’t be like that, since he gave it to her to use and she should be able to use it any way she wants. (Whether this can be called wasteful spending on her part is a side issue) If it was for groceries or to spend on the house that would be a different story, but even then slapping is never justifiable, the Prophet (saw) never hit any of his wives and our Muslim brothers should follow his example.

  5. The ignorants that are calling the abaya a ninja costume are potentially guilty of mocking the deen – a sign of internal hypocrisy.

  6. Chill out holmes, my moms wears the ninja costume all the time, i’m not mocking the deen, i just think that ninjas are awesome.

  7. what happens when a man buys an uber-expensive car? does the wife slap him?

all this slapping. mebbe all married couples should get boxing gloves.

  8. I’m with Stranger on this one.

It is the husband’s ISLAMIC responsibility to provide for his family. (Last time I checked, his wife is part of his family). If he gave her the money with no strings attached (i,e, groceries, etc) then she’s free to use it for whatever she wants, and thats the end of it.

  9. She quilty of consumerism, no one should waste that amount of money on a single abaya. As for the husband is quilty for hitting her which goes against the teaching of the prophet (saws). He is also dumb for giving her that amount of money with no strings attached.

  10. trust saudi women to spend that much on an abaya. But he shouldnt hav slapped her. The thing is the women shouldnt be so extravagant, but explain to her nicely and try to get a refund. She’ll probably just do it again if u slap her.
