New Muslim Cool – Tonight on PBS – 10 PM EST (DCs WETA PBS not showing it, see post)

NEW MUSLIM COOL airs on PBS, Tuesday, June 23 @ 10 pm

Premiere Date: June 23, 2009

Puerto Rican-American rapper Hamza Pérez pulled himself out of drug dealing and street life 12 years ago and became a Muslim. Now he’s moved to Pittsburgh’s tough North Side to start a new religious community, rebuild his shattered family and take his message of faith to other young people through hard-hitting hip-hop music. But when the FBI raids his mosque, Hamza must confront the realities of the post-9/11 world, and himself. New Muslim Cool takes viewers on Hamza’s ride through streets, slums and jail cells — following his spiritual journey to some surprising places in an America that never stops changing. Produced in association with Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB) and the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM).

Dear friends & family,

Thank you to all who’ve expressed support and helped to spread the word regarding the film NEW MUSLIM COOL.

Unfortunately, we have learned that WETA (DC’s local PBS) has opted not to show the film this evening 🙁 We are very disappointed that they would miss the opportunity to reach DC’s very diverse market with this film.

Please encourage your contacts to contact WETA and ask them to add NEW MUSLIM COOL to their programming schedule:

WETA: Audience Services Number 703-998-2724

For those unable to view it in their cities, it will be available after its television premiere as an online video stream in its entirety at

Again thanks for your support!

  1. Muslim cool?

I pray Allah rewards the brother for all the good he does and forgives him for any wrong.

I always felt Islam was cooler than the other faiths any way (counter-culture, revolutionary). Just wondering what will happen if/when the rest of the country feels the same way.

Almost happened back in the early 90’s with the Malcolm X fad.

But that didn’t really go too much further than the urban areas of America.

    Allah knows best.

  2. WETA is not going to show the documentary!? They have to better reason than the one given!

  3. I just checked the programming schedule and not one PBS station is showing this doc in Maryland!

  4. The link to the online stream of the docu can be found on the PBS site but it doesn’t load for me, so now I’m not sure whether this has something to do with me being outside the US or not. Maybe someone can check

  5. I missed it last night unfortunately. Does anyone know if it will air again soon? I plan to buy the DVD but it would be great to know if it might air again.
