NEW MUSLIM COOL airs on PBS, Tuesday, June 23 @ 10 pm

Premiere Date: June 23, 2009

Synopsis
Puerto Rican-American rapper Hamza Pérez pulled himself out of drug dealing and street life 12 years ago and became a Muslim. Now he’s moved to Pittsburgh’s tough North Side to start a new religious community, rebuild his shattered family and take his message of faith to other young people through hard-hitting hip-hop music. But when the FBI raids his mosque, Hamza must confront the realities of the post-9/11 world, and himself. New Muslim Cool takes viewers on Hamza’s ride through streets, slums and jail cells — following his spiritual journey to some surprising places in an America that never stops changing. New Muslim Cool

“New Muslim Cool” follows the lives of Hamza Perez, a Puerto Rican American Muslim rapper (yes all rolled into one!), his family, and his community as they navigate the paths of religion, race, politics, and culture which intersect their lives in post-9/11 America. It is a moving story that showcases the rich diversity of Islam in America,
and which challenges many preconceived notions of what being Muslim in America means.

Snoop Dogg joins the Nation of Islam

He’s now one step closer to Islam. :-D snoop-dogg-nation-of-islam-louis-farrakhan

Snoop Dogg has revealed he has joined the Nation of Islam after appearing at the religious group’s annual Saviours’ Day event in Chicago.

The rapper, who described himself as the “leader of the hip-hop community”, told followers he would share what he learned with other musicians.

He told reporters that he joined the group because he was “doing what’s right and representing what’s right”.

It preaches self-reliance for black people within an Islamic framework.

At Sunday’s event, the rapper sat on stage while Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan gave a speech.
He said afterwards that listening to the speech from Mr Farrakhan was “about a mirror – it’s about looking at yourself”.

He added: “We’re doing a lot of wrongs among ourselves that need correcting.”

When asked if he had joined the movement he said: “I’m already in the Nation, that’s why I’m here.

“I’m an advocate for peace, I’ve been in the peace movement ever since I’ve been making music.

“My whole thing is not about really trying to push my thing on you.

“It’s just about the way I live, and I live how I’m supposed to live as far as doing what’s right and representing what’s right – that’s why I was here today.”

He would not say when he had joined the Nation of Islam.

Other rappers previously involved with the movement include NWA star-turned-actor Ice Cube.

Wearing a Kufi makes you smarter? Jay-Z explains

I was unfortunate or fortunate to be present when a classic song by Nas in which he was dissing Jay-Z (actually he was obliterating him verbally) came on which then reminded me about this line from Jay Z:

“Cause the nigga wear a kufi, it don’t mean that he bright”

That was in a diss track entitled “Blueprint 2″ towards Nas, another rapper who was a Muslim sometime in his life.

Deen Tight – Hip Hop & Islam Documentary

Looks very interesting. Putting aside the fiqh issue of music, this community is probably the largest group with the American Muslim youth community. Even for those who don’t listen to a drop of music, you’ll here brothers droping “yo son” or “sup” or “what’s good homie” and all of these elements are pat of Hip Hop culture. Even the scholars have learned the lingo of the Hip Hop culuture in order to communicate to the youth such as Imam Suhaib Webb and Imam Abdul Malik.

Another aspect is that Hip Hop in the Muslim world is extremely popular and widely accepted. Even in the streets of Mecca. Whether it is good or bad, and whether it is halal or haram, Hip Hop culture is a dominating factor amongst Muslim youth. Even if you look at the young Muslims who are strict with their opinion on music and don’t listen to anything, you will see them listening to spoken-word poetry which is basically hip-hop/rap without the beat. You will find many institutes and organizations using non-instrumental music that contains beats from the hip-hop world (beat-boxing, etc.).

An Iraqi rapper from Canada responded to Busta Rhyme’s Arab Money song with “The Real Arab Money“.  After he released it, Busta Rhymes called him personally and apologized for the misunderstanding with his intention regarding the Qur’anic verses in the remix.  It’s amazing how Busta reached out to a Muslim rapper who isn’t that popular or widely known but yet he was noticed by Busta who is extremely well known in the hip hop world.  I am actually happy that we have some Muslims in the Hip Hop world that still have love for this deen and are able to defend it.

May Allah (swt) forgive us all! I recently blogged about Busta Rhymes song, Arab Money, and how it was insulting to Islam, Muslims and Arabs, but now his remix has gone way to far!  Although this is a huge dawah incentive, becuase many people will inquire, “What is Busta saying?”. This is an open letter to them:

Open Letter to Busta Rhymes, T-Pain, Akon and Swissbeatz

Bismillah

Asalamualykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh my dear brothers in Islam Busta Rhymes, T-Pain, Akon and Swissbeatz.

All praise is due to Allah (swt).  Lord of the worlds.  It is Allah whom we worship and only Allah we go to for help.  It is Allah who has given us everything and it is Allah who will take everything away.

Busta – I recently heard your song called Arab Money and I was disappointed at it.  I posted my reflection here.  Now you have a remix with Akon, T-Pain and Swissbeatz who are also Muslims a long with other rappers like Diddy.

All of you understand that the Qur’an is the word of Allah (swt) and that it should be treated with the utmost respect.  I am not going to judge your intentions but only give you sincere advice.  I am not sure if you are aware of the ruling on music in Islam but I advise you to seek knowledge, read the Qur’an, the Hadith and consult with Muslim scholars in America regrading music in Islam.

It may be your intention was to praise Allah and give thanks to Him for all the money you have been blessed (or tested) with which is a good thing, but the way the song is presented is disrespectful and may stir emotions amongst the Muslim community.

I sincerely ask you to check out Halal Tube and listen to some lectures there.  You can download the audio lectures in MP3 format and add it to you iPod/iPhone and listen to it while you travel around the country and world.

Anything good I have said is from Allah (swt) and anything bad I said is from myself.  Please forgive me if I have offended any of you.

Ma’salaama,

-MR
