Ever wonder why the innocent are locked up and the guilty are free?

Do you ever wonder why there are some Muslims in America who openly support terrorist organizations and promote their literature/media online & on street corners and never end up in jail or arrested? While you have people like Dr. Aafia Siddiqui or Sh. Ali al-Tamimi or Imam Jamil al-Amin or Dr. Sami al-Arian locked up in jail for reasons that are out of this world. Makes me wonder if those Muslims who openly support groups that have been labeled terrorists by the American government are actually covertly not supported just inciters to create a trap for Muslims. There are Muslims in jail that should not be and there are Muslims that aren’t in jail that should be. It’s like Mandela in jail and Hitler free.

I’m probably wrong in my assumptions but there are two certain sites that literally for years have really bothered me. Both of which are run by American Muslims with the content that screams “send me to Guantanamo” but yet they are still living and enjoying the benefits of America while hating on it at the same time. There basically like the FOX News of extremists for Muslims. They only post things to get Muslims riled up and then the government comes in and arrests the ones caught in the trap (Toronto 18, NY-Colorado plot, Virgina Paintball guys, and more recently the Virginia 5 in Pakistan).

May Allah free the innocent.

The Hypocrisy of Those who Support Nidal Hasan

It is shocking to see Muslims praising and calling Nidal Hasan a hero. According to to their own leaders and teachers, Nidal Hasan is a kafir. Anyone who joins the US military is no longer a Muslim. In fact Nidal Hasan is a murtad. Now all of a sudden he is a mujahid in prison. He is a hero. He is worthy of being praised.

Apparently, to these Muslims, you do not recite the shahada to be a Muslim. Apparently, to become a Muslim is to do something which they approve of. Now common sense tells me this just doesn’t make sense, but seriously, can anyone tell me how do Muslims think like this?

I do have a rational explanation. They work for the government to attract innocent (and probably stupid) Muslims into a trap which will then lead to a 2 year undercover operation to finally arrest a real Muslim in order to show the public they are keeping America safe from terrorists. Yay! Thanks government for keeping us safe by creating terrorists!

Serious advice to those in power who may read this: war means casualties. No war means no casualties. It’s very simple.

Muslim Link Newspaper Refuses to Advertise events with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s name on it

The Muslim Link has refused to advertise a fundraiser event for an Islamic School in Baltimore (Al Rahmah School Educational Trust – ASET) because the event’s speaker is Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. Now if the Muslim Link newspaper called itself the MyJamaat Link newspaper I wouldn’t care if they didn’t advertise an Islamic School fundraiser event with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. That actually would make sense, but when the newspaper claims to be the “Muslim Link” and advertises to all the Muslim communities throughout the MD-DC-VA, why would it discriminate against such a mainstream and widely recognized speaker like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf.

It didn’t happen once or twice but many times. It also happened to me when I was working with the United Against Malaria event and we attempted to get the flyer put in the Muslim Link. I thought it wouldn’t be a big deal, but I was wrong. The Muslim Link (and Dar us Salaam) couldn’t support the Malaria event unless the names were removed from the ad. I thought this was ridiculous and hypocritical since Muslim Link had their own fundraiser event in which they invited a non-Muslim, George Galloway as the keynote speaker. Eventually they made their own full page ad (worth $900) and advertised it for free, after I sent an email to several community members (An example of why talking with the organizers don’t work, until things get out).

Is advertising an event with George Galloway better than advertising an event with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf? George Galloway was speaking at a fund-raising event for a Muslim newspaper. Shaykh Hamza is speaking at an event to fund raise money for an Islamic school in Baltimore. Does a Muslim newspaper fundraiser ad with a non-Muslim on it take preference over an Islamic School fundraiser ad with a Muslim.

What’s the difference in taking out the name when you know who’s speaking at the event already and your advertising it anyway. That actually seems like your tricking people. What if a MyJamaat person saw the advertisement without Shaykh Hamza Yusuf’s name and said “Hey, this event looks good. It’s for an Islamic school. Let me take my family and go.” When they get there they find out Shaykh Hamza (who is not from MyJamaat) is speaking they’ll be disappointed. Who would they blame? The Muslim Link. Why? Where is the name of the speaker? In fact it would be better to put the name of the speaker, so everyone knows who’s speaking and everyone who wants to go will go.

It can make a big difference with names like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf or Shaykh Yasir Qadhi or Imam Siraj Wahhaj on an advertisement. If the flyer didn’t have the name, how many people would go? Much less. Muslim Link should know this since they paid so much to get George Galloway. They wanted the crowd so the advertised his name everywhere. Why prevent an Islamic school in Baltimore this same marketing technique just because you don’t like and/or agree with that speaker.

It is not difficult to write “The views and opinions expressed by the organizations and speakers in the advertisements do not necessarily agree with that of the owners and operators of The Muslim Link.” They already have it on their website, why can’t they put it on their newspaper.

I don’t care if Muslims don’t like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. They don’t bother me. My problem is that when a Muslim newspaper that caters to all Muslims and advertised everywhere wants to remove names of Muslim speakers just because they are not in agreement with the owners and operators of the newspaper.

What bothers me more is that Imam Safi Khan is their adviser and told me personally that Imam Zaid Shakir came to Dar us Salaam and did an event. Can someone please tell me the difference between Imam Zaid Shakir and Shaykh Hamza Yusuf? Seriously? What is it the difference other than one is white and one is black. One is taller than the other. So if someone was to do an event with Imam Zaid Shakir, would the ad be fine even with his name on it? What makes Shaykh Hamza Yusuf so special?

For all those brothers and sisters who are going to comment and say “you should email them instead of blogging it”. I have and so have many others several times and the same thing keeps repeating itself. Usually when things go public, changes happen faster and for the better (or worse), but change does happen.

For the brothers and sisters that are part of the Muslim Link, I love you guys all for the sake of Allah but this childish division needs to stop. Either you be straight up with your audience and tell them we don’t support or advertise events that have speakers we do not agree with or you guys be fair and open to advertising events. I understand there is a line to be drawn, but I believe the Pledge of Mutual Respect and Cooperation is that line. Last I checked, AlMaghrib’s and Zaytuna’s scholars are all signatories. AlMaghrib started at Dar-us-Salaam, so the community there would not have any issues with Sh. Hamza’s name on a advertisement in the Muslim Link.

Ultimately, this post would not have been necessary if The Muslim Link would just put aside differences and be fair.

Anyways brothers, I’ve added some comedic relief to my comments, so here it goes:

Sahih Bukhari
Volume 7, Book 69, Number 534:

Narrated Abu Qatada: Allah’s Apostle said, “When you drink (water), do not breath in the vessel; and when you urinate, do not touch your penis with your right hand. And when you cleanse yourself after defecation, do not use your right hand.”

My commentary: Thank God, we greet each other with our right hands.

Sahih Muslim
Book 002, Number 0554:

Abu Huraira reported: the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: None amongst you should urinate in standing water, and then wash in it.

Book 002, Number 0555:

Hammam b. Munabbih said: Of the ahadith narrated to us by Abfi Huraira from Muhammad the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) one is this: The Messenger or Allah (may peace be upon him) said: You should not urinate in standing water, that is not flowing, then wash in it.

My Commentary: ~~Looks like we should flush as we do our thing.~~ EDIT: I mis-read the hadith. It means you can’t use stagnant water to release unless and use it for wudhu. Using the toilet with stagnant water is the fine, since you don’t use toilet water to make wudhu. I know at home and relatives’ house we don’t really have much issues there, but in public places where we don’t know how clean the bathroom facility can be it can become difficult.

I’m a germaphobe so I usually have two options when using public facilities:

The Floating Method:
I use the “floating” method. Basically it’s like your sitting on something that’s not there above the toilet. So your not standing, but your sitting without touching the seat.
Hold it and Pray for no speeding ticket:
Basically keep it in and locate the nearest “safe” house (home, relatives place, hotel rooms, known safe locations for depositing waste, etc.). This will require a well trained driver in extreme circumstances so throw in some duas for no speeding tickets.

Why not stand or use the urinal?

I’m not going to hate, you can stand, but my issue is the collateral damage that comes with using this method. Purity is very important and any drop of impurity ruins that.

What about istinja?

Well, every brother has his own standard and way. In the “safe” houses, we’re pretty much safe. It has all the features that are necessary to fully satisfy our cleaning procedure. When it comes to the public facilities there are various ways. The plastic water bottle is popular. Some soak the paper, but everyone does it somehow.

Purell

If your mom, wife, sister, daughter, etc. does not have this in her bag, then make sure they do. It comes in handy when the water fails to work in the sink (it can happen). Usually most females carry this around, so you should be straight, inshaAllah.

Lastly, don’t stand in the “safe” houses!

True Stories: “The Earing-Wearing Brother”, “From Hijabi to Nojabi” and “Too Much Makeup Sister”

I listened to this lecture by Nouman Ali Khan and was blown away of the reality of this situation and the actions of myself in the past that have made me take a different approach with attempting to bring Muslims closer to Islam. It also reminded me a of a lecture I heard by Khalid Latif at the ISNA convention (2009 one – I think it was an MSA session), in which he highlighted some real life experiences of how “promoting the good and forbidding the evil” backfired the attempt to bring people closer to Islam.

I’ll highlight some powerful scenarios of which are have occured and that were mentioned in both of the lectures. I obviously I am not a great narrator like our narrators of hadith, but God willing, I can get the general message across.

Too Much Makeup Sister

This was a story of a sister who use to face physical abuse by her husband at home. She would wear extra makeup to hide the bruises. Iin the spirit of promoting the good and forbidding the evil, the sister was scolded for wearing too much makeup at the masjid by a brother.

The non-Muslims fascinated by the Muslim prayer

A Muslim invited his non-Muslim friend, who happened to be of a Eastern polytheist religion, to come to the masjid. When he saw the Muslims praying he said, he does the something similar and he then preforms their version. Then another brother in the masjid saw this and in the spirit of promoting the good and forbidding the evil, he removed the non-Muslim guy from the masjid and told him to learn how to pray before he comes back.

The earing-wearing brother

So a brother came to the masjid for the very first time in his adult life to pray after being uplifted by a conference he attended. In the spirit of promoting the good and forbidding the evil, he was mocked and called a girl and not allowed to enter the masjid.

From Hijabi to Nojabi

This sister was the token Hijabi who was an excellent believer and activist, but she a great fitna of which I can’t mention which shattered her faith. This caused her to lose faith and she stopped wearing hijab. In the spirit of promoting good and forbidding evil, she was rejected by the community for taking off hijab without later finding out what happened to her and the reasons behind her losing her faith.

Lessons to learn

Don’t judge people. Communicate with them to understand them. Everyone has a situation and everyone has a fitna (trial, tribulation, problem) that is in their life and no one is unique and perfect. We need to watch what we say to those who we have no knowledge of.

Special Note: All the above stories are true, some were mentioned in the lectures above, and others were known to me based on my personal experience. I am sure others may have more to share so we can learn. I have left the narrations of these stories to be very general so that no one can narrow it down and figure out who.

May Allah forgive me for the times I chased people away from Islam in the spirit of promoting the good and forbidding the evil.

Solution

The Sunnah. Read the seerah.

Listen to this lecture provides some solutions. The answer to how to give dawah is following the example of the Prophet (saas).

An example from the sunnah from the top of my head was this one:

Anas b. Malik reported: While we were in the mosque with Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him), a desert Arab came and stood up and began to urinate in the mosque. The Companions of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Stop, stop, but the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Don’t interrupt him; leave him alone. They left him alone, and when he finished urinating, Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) called him and said to him: These mosques are not the places meant for urine and filth, but are only for the remembrance of Allah, prayer and the recitation of the Qur’an, or Allah’s Messenger said something like that. He (the narrator) said that he (the Holy Prophet) then gave orders to one of the people who brought a bucket of water and poured It over.

Is it shirk to… – Keep it simple, Stick to The Opening

I really don’t know why some people make a big deal about issues that are only relevant to less than 3% of the ummah¹. Let’s just stick to The Opening. Seriously. People know more about ta***s**, isti***h*, and ist***n*² than they know the tafsir of Surah-tul-Fatiha (The Opening Chapter) while some probably don’t even know the meaning of al-Fatiha. Seriously. If we were to do a survey in our own immediate family including all our cousins, aunts, uncles, children, etc. and ask them what is the meaning of al-Fatiha, how many of them would answer it correctly?

Seriously, we need to stick (go back) to the basics, and I mean the literal basic meaning of Surah al-Fatiha. Throw in Surah al-Ikhlas and we’ve covered (almost) everything a Muslim needs to know about their creed. Why make it complicated for everyone? Unless you want to become a student of knowledge and eventually a scholar, then yes, go study aqidah in depth and read the books on it. But if you’re like me who’s main job is a web developer then I don’t need to know whether or not if I can ask a dead person to make dua for me. I just need to pray my fardh and make dua to Allah. That’s it! Nothing else.

Why worry about these issues when only fitna is result of it? Some of us talk about these complicated fiqh/aqidah issues while neglecting the important issues. There are already many books, articles and refutations written on all these issues. No point in adding to it.

Before anyone claims that MR is attacking one side here, I’m not attacking anyone. I’m not concerned with those who practice it or those who are against it. You are welcome to do what you want to do, but I just want you guys to keep it simple for the general Muslim ummah and don’t involve all the creedal differences and fiqh issues related to this.

So the next time someone asks you “what do you think of ta***s**, isti***h*, and ist***n*?” or “do you believe in ta***s**, isti***h*, and ist***n*?” just tell them, “Surah al-Fatiha is all I need”. Don’t forward a fatwa and don’t share your opinion. If you’re studying in your aqidah/fiqh class, then obviously this isn’t related to you, but if your’e not a student of knowledge^{3 4} then keep it simple.

So in conclusion learn about Surah al-Fatiha and it’s meaning!

¹ This post is related to Muslims in America and not necessarily related to the Muslim world.

² I purposely put stars in the Arabic transliteration for the terms so those who don’t know will stay that way. You don’t need them to get to jannah, inshaAllah. I know the terms are part of the deen but many Muslims who have no knowledge of them already practice the agreed upon by everyone form of it, so no need to confuse them with more terms of basic ibadaat.

³ I do not consider myself a student of knowledge and it does not mean I am one even if I attended many classes with various teachers and shuyukh.
⁴ There are many who claim to be students of knowledge, but aren’t really ones. If your full time job is not seeking ilm, then I don’t consider you a student of knowledge. That’s just my opinion. Allah knows best.

Americans support an “Islamic State” in Iran but not anywhere else?

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, ended his prayer sermon in tears on Friday, invoking the name of a disappeared Shiite prophet to suggest that his government was besieged by forces of evil out to destroy a legitimate Islamic government.

The opposition leader, Mir Hussein Moussavi, in criticizing the government, demanded the kind of justice promised by the Koran and exhorted his followers to take to their rooftops at night to cry out, “Allahu akbar,” or “God is great.”

It’s extremely funny and also sad that the news media in America and in general Americans are supporting the Iranian protestors and being pro-Mousavi. Even the conseratives are on the side of the protestors. What they all fail to realize is that Mousavi and the rest of the protesters do not like the American Government (especially it’s foriegn policy) the same way Ahmadinejad does. They also don’t understand that both sides still want to follow Islam and want to establish their version of the “Islamic State”.

Basically America doesn’t like Ahmadinejad so they’ll support anyone who doesn’t like him. They did this in the past with allying themselves with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan and that backfired. I wouldn’t be surprised if some people think Obama should go in to Iran and help them out. So far Obama hasn’t said much, which is good. I hope he understands that America needs to stay quiet and don’t stick their nose where it doesn’t belong.

The Facebook and Twitter support is nice but I really wonder if all those young Americans know what they are supporting when they share or “tweet” it.

Let the haters hate

One thing I learned over the years of blogging and posting on forums is that there are always going to be haters. There is not a single thing anyone can do to please everyone. Why do we even have to please everyone? We have to please Allah and that’s it. By pleasing Allah we’ll be pleasing all those who matter to us the most (parents, spouse, family, friends, etc.). So why bother with the haters?

Where did this post come from? Well just look around us, from the news to the blogs, Islam and Muslims are always being attacked. Whether its non-Muslim vs. Muslim or Muslim vs. Muslim, it’s been there and will be there. Regarding non-Muslims doing the hate, well that’s not anything new and we can’t really do much because Allah says they will always hate us. Just ignore them.

Muslim hate Muslim

Why do Muslims hate on each other so much? I have a theory that we are insecure about our own beliefs. We don’t believe our way is the right way until we can prove it to someone who doesn’t follow what we believe in. The ones being attacked then feels threatened, not by the attacker but by those who will listen to the attacker, so they counter-attack. Then the attacker is counter-attacked (is that even a word?) and feels that he is also threatened for the exact same reason as the other side.

It just keeps going on back and forth from there. Now add a few hundred years and you have the history of Muslim haters. Unity will not stop this, because even unity is hated on.

There is not really any solutions because this is part of the dunya. This is how Allah created us. We just have to control and contain it to our best ability. Ignore it and just keep on walking. If you have firm belief in what you believe in then you don’t need to worry what others say because you are on the right path.

Lastly, on The Day it’ll be “everyman for themselves” so it wouldn’t matter how much hating or “defending” or “refuting” or “responding” you did. It’ll be how much loving or “praying” or “fasting” you did.

Illegal Arms trade and Drug/Human Trafficking

Where do the Muslims get weapons?

The non-Muslims.

Arms dealers in Russia, China, Europe and America love to sell weapons to rich Muslims who then funnel it to other groups who then trade it to other groups and so on until it gets into the hand of a soldier who begins firing it at either a “deviant” Muslims and/or the opposing foreign forces in their country. In other words the only winners are the illegal arms dealers around the world who are making money off the blood of Muslims (mostly). This is why I strongly oppose groups who deal with arms dealers who help fund their illegal business that usually include arms dealing, drug dealing and human trafficking (sex slaves of young girls).

How can you fight Jihad with weapons bought from people who use young girls from South East Asia as sex slaves? Or from Russian and Chinese gangs who deal with drugs and prostitution? Even one of the great Salafi scholars, Sh. Albani said that the Muslims will not be successful if they use the weapons of the non-Muslims.

I have nothing against those who are trying to defend their homes and land. It is obligatory for us to defend ourselves when under attack. The Iraq war is coming to an end and eventually many of the American and other foreign forces will leave in the coming years, but they’ll still be fighting, because some groups do nott want to work with the Muslim Iraqi government and feel the need to get rid of the shia or deviant sunnis. This is where the Mujahideen turn into thugs. They aren’t killing fee sabelillah or for the protection of their homeland. There killing Muslims because they don’t support them. It’s like the gangs in America. They kill others because they don’t agree with them.

From Mujahideen of the Shores to Pirates of the Seas

An example would be the Somali Pirates who’s purpose is to make money. Originally it was pure and solely to defend their shores and land from illegal ships dumping toxic waste. As years went by some began to take other ships and ransom them. The money corrupted them and now that’s all they want. I have some family who are from Kenya and they discuss how the Somali’s buy up all the nice houses in Kenya because there is nothing to buy in Somalia thus causing inflation in Kenya. They also have support from “investors” in other countries such as Dubai who get a percentage of the ransom money depending on how great the ship is and how rich the owner/country is. It’s now a business of pirating ships. While their country suffers they are busy making money driving around in Land Rovers paying $50,000 in cash as a mahr (wedding gift) for any woman of their choice. Their original jihad against the ships dumping toxic waste became corrupted and completely left their scope. Now Somalia will suffer much more because of a bunch of thugs.

Gangs, Robbers and Thieves thriving in Pakistan/Afghanistan

This is what is happening in Pakistan and Afghanistan. There are thugs going around killing innocent people and ransoming others for money. A friend who has family in Afghanistan told me under the Taliban they were safe and could leave the city and drive around, but now there are thugs and robbers on the roads who kill anyone for money. He told me a story of his family’s business truck driver who transported goods was tied up and killed. When they tried to perform ghusl on his body, they couldn’t move his hands due to the stiffness of his body showing that he had been dead for a long time and left there.

These thugs wear turbans, have beards and many times “claim” they are the fighting for Islam, but in reality they are far from it. I’m sure many of you have seen the video that was propagated throughout the media of the young woman being beaten in public. What I don’t understand is where in the seerah or where is an example of the Sahabas beating a women in public? Seriously, can someone show me the evidences for this “punishment”? Is this a true scholar applying the shariah? Would Abu Bakr or any of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) do this? Would Shaykh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah increase him) do this? Or are they practicing “thug Islam”? I have read that even some mujahideen disapproved of their actions and questioned if they were even part of the Islamic group establishing shariah.

No Islamic State anywhere around the world anytime soon

There is none. Others may have differences with me, but I don’t see it. After Amir-ul-Mu’mineen ‘Ali (radiaAllahuanhum), there were no more “pure” Islamic states. That’s why the first four are called the “Rightly-Guided” Khulafa. After that they were was no 100% Islamic state. The Umayyads, the Abbasids, the Ottomans and the rest of the dynasties all ruled the “Islamic State” but there were many things wrong with it but it was still an “Islamic State”. Some were Sunni. Some were Shia. Some were Sufis. Alcohol was even consumed under some Islamic States. Many famous scholars such as Imam Malik and Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal were jailed because of their preaching against the governments. Many of these Khulafa would be considered deviant by different groups of today which basically says for 1000s of years Muslims have been living in “corrupt and deviant” Islamic states. Now some groups thing they can establish a pure Islamic state within a few years? Give me a break. As much as I dislike Saudi Arabia, they are more Islamic than Afghanistan. Yemen is more Islamic than Pakistan. The only Islamic state that can be established anytime soon is a corrupt one. Oh wait, we already have that: all the Muslim countries.

Everyone cries about 1924 being the year the Khilafah ended. Read about 1910 or 1900 under the Ottoman Caliphate. It’s nothing compared to what the Muslims want in Iraq or Afghanistan/Pakistan. Nothing like it. The true 100% Islamic Khilafah ended after Ali radiAllahuanhum. How about working with all Muslims instead of declaring who’s blood is halal or not and then establish an economy, an infrastructure and a social system before grabbing the AK-47 and shouting “Allah hu Akbar” then shooting a Shia or a “murtad” (i.e. a Muslim who doesn’t agree with them). You can buy weapons from the kuffar but you can’t even work with a Muslim?

The Best and Most Successful Solution

The solution to all of this is to use the greatest weapon Allah has blessed us and the most significant and productive weapon used by Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his companions may Allah be pleased with them all. Jihad and warfare can give you power, land, money and even respect, but it can’t give you this.

Dawah: calling people to tawhid.

Dawah and spreading the message of Islam is how Islam spread far and wide. Yes, Islam was spread by the sword but it was also spread by trading, traveling, teaching, social work and other non-violent means.
