The Hunger Strike of Sami al-Arian

Tampa Bay Coalition for Justice and Peace
March 3, 2008

Dr. Al-Arian Begins Hunger Strike

ALEXANDRIA, VA.– On Monday, March 3, 2008, Dr. Sami Al-Arian began a hunger strike for justice to protest continued government harassment. Earlier in the day, Dr. Al-Arian was informed that he would be called to testify before a third grand jury in Virginia, only weeks before his scheduled release date. Under his plea agreement, Dr. Al-Arian should have been released last April at the latest. However, because he has not testified, his sentence was suspended as he served one year on civil contempt. Dr. Al-Arian’s current release date is April 7, but it will likely be pushed back indefinitely when he is called before a grand jury sometime in the coming weeks.

Dr. Al-Arian’s attorneys argue that forcing him to testify is a clear violation of the plea agreement he reached with the government in the spring of 2006. Further, Dr. Al-Arian has been advised that the grand jury subpoena is a ploy by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gordon Kromberg to ensnare him in a perjury trap, as he has done to at least one another Muslim defendant.

The idea that Dr. Al-Arian could avoid a perjury charge by simply testifying truthfully is “naïve,” his attorney Jonathan Turley told the Tampa Tribune. “If the government wants to charge your client with perjury, it is almost certain to be able to do so by asking enough questions over the course of the proceeding.”

This is the third hunger strike undertaken by Dr. Al-Arian, who is diabetic, during his five year incarceration. After his arrest on February 20, 2003, he went on a 140-day liquid only hunger strike to protest the government’s political persecution. During that time, he was hospitalized and lost 45 pounds. On January 22, 2007, Dr. Al-Arian was held in civil contempt for not testifying before a grand jury. He went on a 60-day water-only hunger strike in which he lost 55 pounds, was hospitalized and confined to a wheelchair.

“The mistreatment of Dr. Al-Arian is part of the overall oppression of the Palestinian people. This is cruel punishment,” said Agha Saeed, chair of the American Muslim Taskforce on Civil Rights and Elections (AMT). “The government is playing a cat and mouse game with him. They did not decide to do this until the last minute, just as he’s about to be released. This amounts to psychological torture.”

With only one month remaining until Dr. Al-Arian’s scheduled release, the government is threatening to keep him imprisoned for many years, through its continuous abuse of the grand jury system. Furthermore, as Dr. Al-Arian embarks on yet another hunger strike, the government must either release him as promised or be responsible for his life.

Orphan Run

Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an:

“…if anyone saves a life, it shall be as though he had saved the lives of all mankind…”
Surah 5, Verse 32.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“The one who looks after a widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah’s Cause, or like him who performs prayers all the night and fasts all the day.” (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 64, Number 265)

The Orphan Run stated off as a Muslim initiative, but alhamdulillah many non-muslims are also taking part in it since there is no such platform to help orphans. Orphan Run could be the next big thing which spins all over North America inshaAllah and having an Orphan Run in mutliple cities across.

I think this is a great initiative.  To learn more about this organization and to start it up in your area check out their website here.  There will be an Orphan Run on Saturday March 29 in Mississauga, Ontario.

Barack Obama said:

As president of the United States, I will directly address the people of the Muslim world to make it clear that the United States is not at war with Islam, that our enemy is al-Qaeda and its tactical and ideological affiliates, and that our struggle is shared. In this speech, I will make it clear that the United States rejects torture — without equivocation, and will close Guantanamo. I will make it clear that the United States stands ready to support those who reject violence with closer security cooperation; an agenda of hope — backed by increased foreign assistance — to support justice, development and democracy in the Muslim world; and a new program of outreach to strengthen ties between the American people and people in Muslim countries. I will also make it clear that we will expect greater cooperation from Muslim countries; and that the United States will always stand for basic human rights — including the rights of women — and reject the scourge of anti-Semitism. Simply put, I will say that we are on the side of the aspirations of all peace-loving Muslims, and together we must build a new spirit of partnership to combat terrorists who threaten our common security.

Our Children in Iraq

Take your time and scroll down through these images of our young Muslim brother and sisters in Iraq. Reflect on them and realize that with all the short comings and depressing moments we have living in our warm homes are nothing to what is happening to these young children in Iraq and around the world. Make dua the night you read this. Make dua during the early morning hours. May Allah (swt) protect the innocent and provide justice for them all around the world. Ameen!

Warning: Pictures are not suitable for the weak hearted.

Send 10,000 Letters to Congress for Gaza

Make dua. Complain. Condemn the Israeli government. We’ve done all that. Now let’s try something else:

Action: Send 10,000 Letters for Gaza
CAIR is calling on khateebs (speakers) to give time in their Friday khutbas (sermons) tomorrow toward the completion of a campaign to send 10,000 letters to members of Congress advocating an end to the illegal blockade in Gaza.

CAIR volunteers will provide letters at mosques to be signed by individuals. CAIR will then send these letters to your representatives in Congress.

Action: SIGN THE LETTER and give it to the volunteers at your mosque or mail it to CAIR’s national office at 453 New Jersey Ave, S.E., Washington, D.C., 20003

- Click here to download a letter to your senators.
- Click here to download a letter to your representative.

[NOTE: You can fill in the blanks on your computer before you print it]

Just do it. It’s not going to hurt you. Here is a list of the current Senators. Search for your state and then find their address via Google.  If you really want to help then you could print out a lot of copies and just get signatures from all your family and friends.
